You're accomplishing the same thing but in a different way. in my build the input ground path goes input- -> diode case -> aixiz module -> heatsink -> host -> batt -. I could have sandwhiched a wire between the top of the host and the heatsink and it have worked fine as long as a good connection is made. You don't have to run it from the case pin but most find it the easiest way since most heatsinks and hosts are aluminum which are next to impossible to solder to.

Mine's not sandwiched between the heatsink and the host. On one it's soldered to the copper heatsink itself (that was fun to accomplish. :D) On others it's attached to a setscrew that's screwed into the heatsink.

machine the module/heatsink for a press or interference fit and you don't have to worry about continuity or thermal tranfer problems. ;)

I do, but I still lather them up in thermal grease before I press them in. It's probably ok, but better safe than sorry. So I just attach the (-) input to the heatsink itself.
