What do i do....?

:-? urm basicly im a noob.

ive read loads of threads getting closer to my answer but not actually getting there.
basicly i extracted 2 laser diodes from a dvd+/- rw.
ive figured that they are different 1 is red and one ir.. and i need to recognise which is which
i borrowed a multi meter of my mate and im just poking around getting no result.. i dont even knw where im supposed to be testing and on what setting.
What can i do to recognise which diode is which and whether they still work or ive destroyed them :'( :'(

You can try testing you LDs, see drawing for meter setting. If you get a reading one way and not the other it suggests that the LD MAY be ok.

When you connect the leads the correct way you may find that the red LD will glow slightly.
If there is no glow assume it is the IR LD and do not look closely at the front of the LD, IR can blind you!
