What did I do wrong?

Hey so I got the blue ice JAD kit from yobresal, and an m140 diode from dtr. I wasn't able to make this diode more than flush with the Heatsink. I connected to driver leads to the correct pins of the diode. (Red wire is positive right?)

Here is what it looks like after trying to press the diode in all the way.

I put the battery in + facing out. Turned it on and nothing. I tried the batteries the other way and nothing came out either.

I'm using RCR123a 3.2v rechargeable li-ions to power the buck driver set at 1.2A
Did I brake the diode while trying to press it in? Or did I so something else wrong?

1) why not contact yobsreal directly?
2) plus facing out? - reversed polarity and perhaps burned the driver

Is anything heating up at all when you turn it on?
Does the diode even emit a small amount of light or none at all?
What method did you use to press the diode in?
Do you have a DMM? This way you can at least check your connections.
 
Nothing heated up at all when turning it on. No light or anything. I used a current tester with the pins on the diode and something came up on the meter but I don't have the right setting on the meter so I can't tell you the number that read.
 
It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the diode got the crap beaten out of it after being pressed in. Is this the case?
 
If I had to guess, I'd say it may have broken in the process of pressing it in. Looks like you wired it up correctly.
 
There are doide pressing tools you can buy but I've had success using the back half of an aixiz module. Lately I prefer buying diodes that are already pressed into the modules. Don't get down though, it happens to everyone.
 
I tried pressing it in with pliers at first. Then I used a socket in a vice, which pressed it in, but came in lop sided a little. Next time ill start with the socket and it perfectly straight.
 
Did you break the diode window while pressing the diode in crooked? Look at the face of the diode and check if the glass has been shattered. That could be the problem. It is not supposed to press in further than flush. They press in flush with the heatsink so if you were trying to get it to go further than flush that could have also been a problem. Connections look good though. Also positive end goes in first. Negative on the tailcap.
 
The window on it did not crack or shatter. But I scraped up the back of the diode with pliers while trying to plug it in. Also I notice the plug that holds the pins came loose but it looked like the pins were still attached. Also could it be the batteries I'm using? Tenergy lifepo4 3.2v rcr123a?

You may also have messed up a pin internally in the diode and broke the bond wires. If this happened the diode is done for.


Nothing against Yob's kit but this is why I love 12mm module style builds. Grab a cheap press and get 100% clean and successful presses every time. The thing about press fit heatsinks is they are all around thermally superior so I only get press fit style lasers that are complete to avoid the potential casualties during pressing.

You may want to consider sending the heatsink and a new diode to yob and asking him to press it for you(with reasonable compensation for his time). Just keep in mind that even with skill such as his there is still risk of diode failure during pressing and transport so he couldn't be held liable.

I don't know I think I should just purchase another diode unless I can fix my problem with this one. Where can i get the little blue shrink wrap tubes that came with the kit? for the diode pins.

Flaminpyro sells heatshrink tubing HERE if you need more and the Yellow #2 size is what you will need.

Unless something went wrong with your driver I would suspect your diode to be dead. What you could do is hook up a 12v LED to the driver briefly and see if it lights up. If it works then you are going to need a new diode. If you think you can press it yourself the second time around by all means try. Make sure before you hook up the new diode that you remove power from the driver and short the leads out to avoid stored power burning out the diode.
