what can i take apart to find a decent diode?

i have taken apart cd burners, dvd burners, hard drives, and everything i can find...but i cant get the diode to work...i must have 13 different diodes, and none of which work...i am putting power directly to it...am i doing anything wrong...please help, i think im waisting alot of money! ...thanks...

I urge none of you to provide this user any help in his search for a high powered laser, he is clearly trying to use it to harm other's and many of his posts refer directly to burning through skin.
