But yes, laser TVs are the future. A big part of the problem with that set as of now is the lack of suitable technology. That TV is using a DPSS system, which makes it bigger, heavier, run hotter, and less energy efficient. At first the price might not change much, but diodes replacing the DPSS will also soon make the TVs cheaper.

Once green diodes are developed and improved, and blue diodes are improved, laser TVs with be able to get rid of the DPSS and go to electrically-pumped diodes.

So in the future, we're looking at as thin as LCDs, better colors than LCD and likely better than plasma, better blacks than LCD, less weight, more energy efficient, and likely just as cheap as LCD and plasma. Should make a heck of a TV.


Oh, and think about replacing ceiling-mount LCD projectors with a laser projector in your cell phone. Another very real, and VERY cool possibility.

From what ive read on the laser TV subject, the colour will blow LCD and plasma out of the water :o
Not only is it supposed to be a much more vivid image, the laser TV will not lose its quality. LCD and plasma degrade over time, with the colours dulling with age.

And the whole projector idea, well lets just say I cant wait ;D to rip one apart and make lasers

Oh yeah, great colors. Especially with the LCDs, the blacks should be exponentially better. I used to have a chart showing the color range of the different displays, and the laser is clearly better than the others. I'll see if I can find that chart again sometime soon.

There are still some problems, like speckle. Speckle is a hurdle for displays just because of trying to get an even dot without the interference messing up the image. It'll always be there, but there'll hopefully be ways found to lessen the effects. And, of course, the lack of the existence of usable diodes.

But we'll get there.

I don't see how they modulate them. 1080P is 2,073,600 pixels. At 30Hz the modulation rate would have to be 60MHz - about 6,000 times what most analog lasers are capable of. PCAOM? Maybe I should just read the data sheet.

Edit: I read DLP. I'm picturing three lasers combined and the white beam treated as the beam of a halogen lamp from then on as far as optics are concerned.
