Viper 125mW vs DX 200mW

If you wanna be safe, go with the Viper or a Nova Lasers X-125 ( I would go NOVA), otherwise i know people that have bought that 200mw from DX have tested them to have around 200mw + output with only about 6mw of IR leakage. Now, its very important that you understand that some of these DX lasers might not be filtered properly. So like i said, if you want to be safe, go NOVA X-125, the reason i say NOVA is because their 125mw lasers actually put out 125mw.
A good DX 200 would be better, but it's a toss up, and good luck getting DX to do any kind or warranty or anything. They've even told a handful of people who've had customs issues "tough luck". That's the DX gamble... getting what is advertised.
If you want guaranteed results though, go with a laser company, not a junk shack that also happens to sell lasers.
The other thing though is you could buy 3 dx200's for the cost of a 125 anywhere else.

Its a tough comparison, but first off don't go with a Viper 125 - 60 second average output is likely closer to 95-115mW. I would suggest going with novalasers - they have a good reputation and would probably deliver at least >123mW on a 60 sec average.
The DX NewWish laser really is a toss up. Its a fraction of the cost, and for good reason. The Viper/novalasers x series lasers are tried and true, high quality units. The DX are.. not. I'm not too sure about power outputs on the DX though. I've heard claims of getting peak green ratings ~200mW with the best batts, but not just because of leaking IR, but also because of stability issues I wouldn't expect the 60 second average to be as impressive. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if you can pull 125mW of green out of a DX on a 60 sec avg, but unfortunately I've only owned the 100mW units so I can't tell you for sure.
Generally though, if you want a good, solid, quality greenie, go with the nova x series. If you mind taking a bit of a gamble on a crappier greenie, you may save hundreds of dollars and get the same raw output with a DX/NewWish.

I have a DX200 from the first batch. That said though it had MAJOR problems when I recieved it and took a good bit of work to make it acceptable. With lithiums it will go to 180mw of green and ~25mw of IR, although I haven't tested it recently.
On NiMH it does about ~120mw, and will stay over 100mw for a minute. IR leakage there is much less, around 10mw, although I have since added a filter it doesn't seem to make any diffrence at all, since the "cap" portion of the laser actually seems to block/scatter most of the IR. there is a faint IR donut around the dot without filtering, but it's so miniscule it's not really worth even thinking about.
Even with that said, what I got from DX isn't necessarily what someone else will get. From my experience their quality control ( either newwish or dx ) is crap at best. But I did get a > 100mw pointer for $120 so I can't complain too much

Well... from what I had personally experienced... I got a unit that was so damn powerful it used to burn my skin almost instantly... but quickly after, it would start mode-hopping like hell! But one e-mail later and I was sending the unit to get a replacement... So, I haven't had any bad luck with this personally, but I can't guarantee that anyone would have the same results.

these lasers can be up to 50% IR. I'm not concerned about the safety issue there, rather that you should just know what you're getting. I have a 200mW DX that does actually test at around 200mW - until the IR filter is in place then drops to about 125mW.
That said, $120 for 125 MW of green is a damn good price... I just added some heatsinking to mine and its duty cycle is a bit better than normal.

while what you measure may show a diffrence between 200mw and 125, that doesn't mean there is 75 mw of IR. The ir has a diffrent absorbance rate and any laser meter with a silicon sensor is going to freak and show a stupidly high result. Most likely you have 10 or 15 mw or IR and 125 mw of green, almost exactly what my filtered dx200 does. At that rate, screw the IR, if you get close enough to the beam for the IR to be a problem the green is going to f you up 100x as much. IR is so divergant anyways that if you got a refelction close enough to the aperture for reflect 90% of the IR, you got the almost all the green reflected to, and it's FAR more dangerous. This IR paranoia is really overblown. On some pointers with a lack of AR coatings and filters it can be a serious problem, but not really anymore. with early greenies it was a big problem since cheapies could skimp on ar coating and filters and blast out 5-25mw of green along with 50+mw of IR. Now they've learned the coating make MUCH more green, so now they have 50-100mw of green with the coatings and only a small amount < 5-10mw of IR leaking. The filters usually take care of that.

Daedal, did you filter out the green? You can stick it through goggles or a few lasers of film negatives to filter out the spare green, but if you don't do that the whitish blob of IR is likely being overpowered by the green.
