Hey all,

First post here, but I've been a lurker for a long time.

I have an ALC-60X and Omnichrome 150R that have been in my collection for a long time, about 17 years. Aside from firing this laser up once in a while to keep the tube happy, I've come to the realization that I probably won't ever use this laser for the project I bought it for. I originally wanted to make a full color laser projector, but too many other projects got in the way. I've been thinking about selling it for a couple years now, and even brought it to the local ham radio swap meet last spring but didn't get any interest at all - I don't think anyone even knew what an argon laser was.

A lot has changed in the past 17 years - when I bought this laser, DPSS laser pointers were still kind of a new thing and red penlasers had just become something everyone had on their keychain. eBay used to be full of ALC-60X's sold by several vendors (MWK, MI, others), but these days it's very rare to see an ALC-60X for sale at all. I paid a bunch of money for this setup back in 2000-2001 (I think I paid over $800 for the supply alone) but I suspect that the availability of cheap solid state lasers is driving down the cost of used argons.

As a result it's hard to judge what this should be worth today. I'd appreciate any advice on how much this setup (ALC-60X + 150R) might be worth, as well as the best venue to sell this stuff (eBay or ?) I haven't shipped an argon in a long time and I am sort of dreading having to box this stuff up (it's heavy!!), so tips on shipping would be helpful as well.

Oh - power output is around 100-120mW, at least that is what I was told when I purchased the tube eons ago. It's multiline, but the blue 488nm line is by far the strongest (i think the old xerox optics favor 488 over green).

Welcome to LPF - you should post an introduction thread and fill in your location on your profile. :) You should also avoid double posting, you can use the edit button to update your previous post.

As for price, somewhere around $200-300 (plus shipping) would probably be reasonable depending on condition/tube hours. You could ask for more if it's a low hours/good condition system.

488nm is the stronger line at lower current, the 514nm line favors higher current. Does depend on the optics too of course.

ALC-60s are nice, I miss mine!

Thanks for the welcome!

About the blue/green balance - that makes sense - the 514 line isn't visible below about 6 or 7A but comes up fast as current is increased.
