Hi !

Yes I know the lasers are not meant to be toys or weapons but I have a serious question. I want to buy a 100mW green laser for astronomy and to measure large forest parcels at countryside. There are wild boars in the forest and very rarely bears, the wild boars can get very aggressive so my question is if anyone has used a laser to scare wild animals or how do the animals react when seeing a beam especially at night.
 





I suppose if your Laser is massive enough you could use it
as a club.

I'm not in favor of blinding wildlife or animals in general...
Their life is tough enough as it is...
If you feel that your life is in danger from the wild boars
perhaps a baseball bat or gun would be more suitable..

But seriously, I'm with lasersbee. I don't think blinding an animal is a very good idea. A stun gun maybe?

I did some research and I think I will order these lasers. Let me know what you guys think about them and what is the beam range for the green laser.

I would go with these 2 products for starters. I need to know the distance for the green laser because I need at least a few miles range to measure large areas.

How do you measure with the laser?

I don't think boars are aggressive. I've been in forest, at night, and there were 2 wild boars with their young, a few meters away from me. And they just continued their way, as well as I continued going my way. Just remain calm and no fast movements.

For defense I'd use a bat, if the collision is inevitable.
 
How about a handgun if you're worried about them?

I have scared horses by shining my laser next to them, obviously no where close to their eyesight. However.. I don't know about boars being scared!

The green laser CenTu, is advertised as 50mW, however, you really can't trust that too often (From my experience, anyway). If you were to want to buy a relatively cheap green laser, I'd head over to

If you buy a 100mW green laser, I don't think you'd have a problem shining it 2-3 miles.

I have thought about this question myself since I have a 1.6W 445. But not with wildlife.

If I ever happened to have it with me just walking, or at work, I would gladly use it to permanently blind an assailant who was trying to rob me, my store, or anyone else at gunpoint.

After all, it is a weapon.
 
Boars seem like they'd be pretty hard to defend against, even when blinded. I'd imagine a .454 casull would be able to defend against both bears and boars, but that would be quite expensive, and I don't know Austrian gun laws. Another good option may be bear spray. It's essentially pepper spray but much more potent. I hear it works great. I'm not sure how well it would work against a boar. I don't think using a laser against an animal is a very good idea.
 
I have read that boar cant even see Green. It wont even know your shooting it... I hunt Wild Boar with a #45 62" Recurve Bow. A Flare or Airhorn might be more effective for you if you dont plan on keeping the thing you kill. Just get the largest MagLight and use it like Cops do...

If its from this planet and has eyes, nose, & lungs bear spray will mess it up big time.
Depends on hoe quick you are.
 
Lasers as a weapon... no thank you. If a handgun is not an option, fair chance a shotgun is.

There was an excruciatingly long thread discussing the pro's and con's of lasers as weapons. It's locked, but still out there.
