Even though, I like to think it's something that COULD happen :)
 
The carrier sits in the middle of the battle group. If a lighthouse is asking a carrier to divert course then the cruisers and destroyers out front would have already hit the light house. The E-2 Hawkeye radar planes (looks like propeller driven AWACS) would have known about it long before the lighthouse even knew the battle group was coming. Finally the F-18s flying standard CAP (combat air patrol) would have already overflown the target if they even suspected it was a boat. This never happened.
