I have been having some very enlightening conversations with vendors. It seems we were right. There is only ONE importer that had these. EVERYBODY was buying from them and reselling. With how fast these went out and how many orders went unfilled, they are all begging the importer for more. We will have to wait to see what the outcome of those request will be. No one here even knows if there are any more of these available or if there were subsequent "runs" or if there were subsequent runs, if the same sled was used.

We will just have to wait it out. If you find one out there and want one, buy it.

Keep your eyes peeled for any other uses of the PHR-803T sled.

As far as I know, no one knows what these diodes are or where they come from... the most we know is there's a micro-qr 2d barcode on them, seen here which may contain useful info...
Aside from that all we know is they're not made by nichia.

It's been speculated that these diodes were meant for bluray burners or some other application which requires higher powered diodes, but these are surplus which did not meet quality checks, so they're being used at a much lower current as a reader diode.

I believe that Nichia and Sony are the ones that are staying in the 405nm market. I have no idea who manufactured the diodes in these sleds. Toshiba decided to get out of the market.

That's one of the scary options. These may be left overs being dumped on the market.

I do not think they just tossed their name on a reader with B grade LD's in them.. My .02. They seem to lase very well. Nice far field pattern. THe pinouts seem to look like Sony. I bought 24 sleds from Evertec (Computer geeks wholesale outlet) before the stock ran out. I am very intrigued with the color.

So what diode should I use if I want a 150mW to 200mW 405nm laser?

I am currently making them lab style with slow start CC power supply. I have too many pointers.

So far for that much power your only option is to buy and kill a $250-300 6x BluRay burner. You can get 80-100mW fairly safely from an 803T though..

Any manufacturers of diodes that powerful sell them for like $3500+ in quantities of less than say 10,000..

this thread has links to a manufacturer which makes 500mW diodes, for the low, low price of $6638 each in quantities of 10 or more.

This was very much the same back in the early 80's when RED laser diodes first came out. One the mass production begins and sales go flat, surplus diodes / systems will be available. Some mfg's still have reletively expensive 635nm laser diodes. Sony & Sanyo have always been expensive from the get-go. Hitachi, Rohm, Sharp, Toshiba have been better with pricing.

It was a long distance call for me and wanted to keep it short, but he offered to tell me who, in hopes that they would sell some to me. The guy at tekgem said it was one supplier sending out to resellers, and then someone came along and bought up the remaining from the top of the chain. He also stated that there is another guy he knows and will try to get more. He seemed awfully confused with the last minute popularity, so I suggested he track what sites were linking to the order page which will most likely lead him here

Someone bought over a thousand units??!!!! I just got done stripping about 50 of then and it's a lot of tedious work, 1000 would be unthinkable!

My guess is they are going to re-flash them as blu ray burners.

PS: the silver ones haver the 8011T head...
