First of all I'd like to say hi because it's my first post here. I just registered but I am a long time lurker. My experience with lasers is not that great, I currently have 5mW and 50mW green laser and I would like to step up a bit. What I'm looking for is a laser that can be seen easly in daylight and is really bright at night. I've narrowed my choice to 300mW - 500mW, that's what I'm interested in. However my budget is just 300$ and most of the lasers in this range are out of my reach. So then I found the Spartan 1W laser from dragonlasers, I know it's a well-known and respected brand and it's priced very reasonably. However, from what I've read blue lasers aren't as bright as green ones plus I've heard about the so called "Blue Hazard". I don't care that much about the burning capabilities however it would be a nice addition. And yes I do have the goggles.
Here are some I found:

If you aren't worried about burning, then go for a green laser. Your eyes are much much more sensitive to green light than any other wavelength/color (peak sensitivity at 555nm in daylight, a yellowish green), so I would say go for a green laser. If you're on budget, try laserbtb. Also, 500mW of green is insanely bright, it would look like literally a solid green line at night. Also, be very careful with lasers that powerful, instant eye damage is easy.

Thanks for the reply. I'm still tempted by that Spartan price and since I've never owned a blue laser, does the blue have any real advantages besides burning?
 
Hi my 2 nd post you don't mention where your from, i agree go for the green
My 250mw green real is about as bright as my 2000 mW 450 nm blue and can be seen in indoors easily during the day . of course my blue is kick ass on burning black paper, white paper, plastic, wood in seconds and has a more light saber look to it ie thicker beam I'm in Australia so the laws here suck
so i am buying whatever black market ones i can get my hands on 1 mW legal power is beyond pathetic in Australia
 
The blue laser offers:

awesome burning power
cool color
lower quality beam profile


The green laser offers:

decent burning, depending on the beam diameter
neat color
high quality beam profile


I'd say just go for the green, laserbtb has some good green lasers
 
After reading through some posts I think I'm gonna go with the Spartan. I've never owned a blue laser and I think it would be a nice addition plus the whole burning stuff got me quite interested. I didn't realise a laser could burn through so much stuff. I think I'll keep my 50mW for the sky pointing and use blue one for fun. Of course using goggles and being as careful as possible.

basically both will produce a crazy beam at night but blue will burn better, also green will have a better dot and divergence than blue

one good thing about blue is,, most people have never seen one

He/she has no need to, I wouldn't recommend that you publicy push that...

And yes, ultimately it is up to you, all I can say is that you probably wouldn't go wrong with getting a green. But it's up to you :beer:
 
STOP!!! don't get that spartan. they're ok lasers, but for the same amount you could get a more powerful custom built laser that is focus-able. spartans are not focus-able. Blord sells 1W focus-able 445nm lasers starting at $110. more power and nicer hosts/heat sinks make the price go up, but you were about to spend over $240 right?

Blord is exceedingly pleasant to deal with, which is an understatement
 
i agree, if you go with blue buy from an LPF member, the quality, customer service, workmanship and power will be ten times better than any dragon laser
 
I support getting 18650 batteries with a capacity of 3400mAh like the ones pictured below, if the laser you end up getting takes one or more 18650s. I've never seen more capacity in a 18650. 26650 batteries are even bigger, I've seen them up to 4200mAh. If it ends up being 16340 or 18350, I'm sure someone can recommend some. panasonic makes good 18650 batteries with 3400mAh capacity that are relatively inexpensive.

I'd also get a charger with multiple charging current selections if you get any 18650 or 26650 batteries. otherwise you'll wait a long time for your big batteries to charge.

I second getting an eagle pair, though if you plan to get other wavelengths or green lasers (532nm) lacking IR filters, there are other, more expensive eagle pairs that will suit you better.

It's less common for members to build 532nm lasers, because these are DPSS. I've only heard of members doing 532nm builds with pre-assembled modules, which they basically stick into a host. 520nm is another story. there are 520nm diodes, this wavelength is not DPSS. right now though, power for these doesn't much exceed 100mW.

class 4 532nm DPSS lasers are some of the most expensive lasers there are, generally only yellow lasers and sometimes 473nm lasers cost more.
