Nah, that's a perfectly reasonable amount of power if you're scanning really fast and/or projecting something really large... I'm sure the lasers in your avatar would have to be over a watt or two each.
Reminds me of a thread I read recently about a guy who built a 10k scanner out of a stage mover and a 2W green...

Laser shows can be upwards of 100W. 3W isn't a heck of a lot for the pros.

So... it can haz modulayshun? In any case, easilly worth $8000.
 
$2,226 with 12 hours to go and the reserve still has not been met. I wish I had a chunk of cash right now. I'd be all over that like flies on shit.
 
A while back i used to have one of these for beam displays for smallish indoor light shows, They sell for about $12K new., so if it works someone got a good deal.

One BIG warning about it, NEVER POWER OFF WITH THE SWITCH! ALWAYS USE THE KEY! Abrubt power off will kill the diode!~
