I got some Amazon giftcards and really wanted to buy a Laser pointer for stargazing and such. I read the FAQ and first buy Guide, but I live in the UK so I can't order from these websites. This one interested me, as people were commenting it was over-spec, and I guess a 1mw overspec would be 5-10 mw. Would I need some safety goggles with this? I have used some 1mw and 5mw lasers before, but they were mostly bad quality and broke after a while.
Thanks

Never buy lasers from amazon. They are usually cheaply made and dangerously overspec. It's probably be more like 20+mW overspec. And yes, you'd need safety goggles.

The question is .... what do you want it for? If it is for doing a presentation, than it might be too much, and if it is to try popping a balloon than it might be too little...

Thanks for the responses. Do you know any UK place that sells good lasers around 5pound? or any good ebay offers?
Ill probably dont want one too powerful, even though Ill be careful with it.

How much is too powerful? Anything over 5mW can give you eye damage. What are you wanting to use it for, 5 pounds is pretty cheap (if I'm getting the conversion right).

Anything >50mw is too powerful I say. Im not going to run around popping balloons, just want a laser that can point quite far.
I can pay more than 5 pounds, 10 to 15 is ok, which would be 15-20 dollars

You didn't mentioned which color you prefer?
I would offer you this one,it should be 20mW~35mW (if 532nm color fits for you and you have some time ,because it's out of stock at the moment) LZCB - CYBER 532nm 30mW Focusable Green Laser Pointer
,but you never know if it will be overspec...However lazerer lately had some negative feedbacks.

Or this one from rayfoss (also 532nm) http://www.rayfoss.com/productn.asp?ArticleID=9

P.S. About safety goggles/glasses.If you 're planning just to point at sky then you don't need it.But if you 're going to watch at beam closely, try to burn stuff, play with difractions etc.I'd say that you should get goggles which blocks 532nm.

I'd recommend THIS one, although it is slightly out of your price range :yabbem:
