Temporary power supply for my diode?

hey guys, i just got my first 445 diode but i dont have a driver yet. im asking if theres anything i can use to see if the diode runs fine or not. please reply back thanks!
 





Make a LM317 driver.... it will cost about $3 in parts and all components can be bought at radioshack
 
If you skimp for the quick and easy route, you will also have a temporary diode along with that temporary power supply.
 
I did test them with 4.5V carbon-zinc battery. You must be careful about ESD, battery accumulated charge, and heat-sinking (though for 1 seconds test that should be no problem), and also polarity (though I actually DID connect it in revert for few seconds and it survived).
Still it's risky and it's all your responsibility.

alright since i dont wanna ruin my diode ill just make an LM317. thanks guys!
 
DrSid, it survived reverse polarity? Usually this means a certain death, instant or later. Though diodes. What I use for testing is a 8 ohm resistor and a bench power supply. I had a teacher calling resistors "frequency independent voltage to current converters".

Yes .. 3 seconds at least, 4.5V. You can mark the wires, check them and recheck them, and then connect it wrong anyway. I did not use that diode to full power yet, but on 200mW it works without any artifacts.
