I stumbled across this youtube video a year or so ago and have always wanted to make one of these...

It looks to be really simple to create your own pulsed UV laser out of nothing but a neon sign transformer and some scraps of metal... here's a link to the construction details:

Has anyone made one of these before? Any thoughts?

cool! but i dont know how the heck did he do that :S

I dunno really... it seems that the long transverse spark gap throws enough juice to excite the air into lasing... like any gas laser, only the gas here is regular air at atmospheric pressure... looks fascinating and I'm baffled by its simplicity. This guy makes it look stupidly easy, though it looks like he also makes his own CRT's... http://www.sparkbangbuzz.com/crt/crt6.htm now THAT's hard core!

so has no one here tried this?

it seems so bloody simple... I'm going to go look to see if I have a neon sign transformer right now.

It IS very simple. There isn't really much that you need to ask about it.

I made one last july with an oscillator, a TV flyback xformer and the corresponding HV multiplier.
After fiddling with the electrodes alignment and spacing for awhile (2 days) I did get it to lase. It was multimode.
The bangs the spark gap emanates are just horribly loud and annoying and I quickly gave up using it. It could be used to pump dyes, such as rhodamine, though. I never got to that point, eventhough I could find the dye...but not the cuvettes.
Maybe next time...
