Re: Tanning Bed goggles replacement for laser gogg
Goggles that are not certified for laser protection cannot be assumed to be good enough for laser protection. Yes, they may have dyes that do ok at blocking certain colors. But lasers have a power density that is many orders of magnitude higher than what is hitting those goggles from normal light. That higher power density can easily and very quickly bleach dyes in most any lenses and allow the laser light straight through. In fact, they may be knocking down some % of light at specific laser wavelengths, but that percentage, without being tested and certified, cannot be assumed to be enough blocking to protect you from accidental laser exposure; the laser light may very well be going straight through even if they look to your eyes to be blocking some of a certain color.
So no, I wouldn't use them. If anything, they may be like sunglasses and actually make it LESS safe by blocking light in and causing your pupils to dilate, letting more laser light in if an accident does happen.
There is no replacement for certified, tested, guaranteed laser safety goggles, because there is no replacement for your eyes.
