Sup dudes!

it looks like you just went and searched for the highest power laser for the cheapest price.

Tell me i'm wrong.

I wouldn't go near a 500mw laser that cost $50. At that price the parts, worksmanship and quality control would be bottom of the barrel. If it really does pump put 500mw it will probably die or break down fairly quickly, and good luck trying to get your money back from a cheap ass chinese company.

Even if it does work, that much power is insanely dangerous and I wouldn't want it in a laser built to the lowest quality standards.

And as a first laser, what the hell are you thinking? That's no different than buying a Magnum as your first "training gun." Since you've never handled one before, you're bound to make mistakes, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a nubie who has a 500mw as his "training laser."

I agree with Toke, $50 would be a decent price for a reasonable laser at 50mw - but 500? I woudn't think anything under $300 would be safe.

No offense, but you're approaching this like most other nubies who jump in - they come here asking from their first post "hey where can I get the cheapest, highest power laser to burn stuff with?"

People like that have their heads up their ass and think of lasers as a toy. And maybe a 5mw laser could be played with as a toy... but once you start getting upwards of the 100mw range, you're starting to edge into "easy eye injury" territory.

Just replace the work "laser" with "gun." Would you go out and buy the cheapest, highest power GUN so you could go out and shoot tin cans? Of course not.

But looking for the cheapest, highest power laser to burn matches and tape is the same damn thing.

THE SAME.

Im still learning myself about all the interesting technical aspects. It sounds like you just got some excellent advice from the vets- they know what they are talking about. Please be careful and good luck!

Well, being it my first laser, I didn't care about quality too much, I just wanted a first laser as a first laser. Kind of like a first car, you just want a beater until you can get something nicer. I know their underrated so I figured maybe if I got one that was rated high there would be a chance it would have a decent amount of power to it. And I understand your concerns, I don't plan on being stupid or anything like that. I already own a little red laser pointer, a cheapie one from walmart that i've owned for about a year, and i've always been fascinated with it. It's been fun to have my dogs chase it, see how far it can reach, etc. But I know with a powerful laser, I have to be alot more careful.

Oh I agree, thanks. I'm putting the good info to use.

Recently, I had a sata port on my DVD drive break off, so I should be trashing it soon, and possibly getting the diode out of it in hopes to build my first laser, weather the shell be whatever I can find.

"Now could someone explain what nm and mW are? I know one probably has to do with the lasers strength. "

nm stands for nano-meter and is commonly used to describe the wavelength of a beam of light. This also determines the color of light.

mW is a unit of measurement for power commonly used in Physics and Electricity. It stands for miliwatts

Hope this helped you :);)
