Strange red dot from a 650 nm

I apologize if this has been asked before, I tried my best with the search feature.

Anyways, I got a red laser from DX today and it has an interesting spot...
Any ideas what causes this?

That's perfectly normal for the LPC diodes. There are some reds that lack the "wings" but off hand I don't recall which.
 
yeah i see nothing wrong with it either. most red diodes produce a "line" and not a dot. its just the type of diode it is so dont worry. plus your camera doesnt do a good job of picking up the dot/line. I hope you are using safety glasses when viewing this dot, if not wish your eyes good luck
