It appears someone is sending fake spam to fill up the forum with trash, is there a way we can tie some kind of control to limit the posters ability to post once two spam reports come in from long time members with good rep counts?

Been discussed many times.
Many forums I use employ systems like, register, 1 hour wait to post or puzzle to solve ect.

I believe n00bs 1st post(s) should be moderated, again, a system I've seen used many times.

The powers that be CHOOSE not to implement these anti spam measures for whatever reason. So all we can do is what we do now.

Regards

Must have weighed it out, OK, everyone is already ahead of me on that idea then.

If anyone even looks, there is a pattern to the NAMES of the spam accounts that would be easy to create a filter for.
At least there was the last time that i checked. I can almost guarantee that this is someone that got pissed and wrote a spam program and let it loose via either proxy's/vpn's or a botnet.
The pattern is obvious enough to know that it is seemingly one source for the dreaded spam.

I almost left the site after having been here since 2006 under a now non-accessible username due to coming back to all the spam and lack of effort to combat it.

I have a non-accessible user name too, after leaving for a year from being whipped with a wet noodle too much for having an attitude, when I wouldn't answer questions about what I was trying to build. Some members became concerned because as a newbie, I was asking how to collimate some high power IR lasers :p

At that time, there wasn't much spam, but yes, this does appear to be from a bot.

Just to name a few things that make them stand out:
8-12 character unpronouncable names all lowercase usually w/o other character sets
no avatar
no about section
and no signature

Sorry, someone kept creating new accounts to PM me with taunting me over small minded stuff, so I turned off the ability for anyone to PM me. You have been added.

Quite a bit of spam recently, yes----the mods are very good about getting rid of it quickly so forum looks good.

I had to turn off PMs because of Vietspam PMs --very annoying. Probably a better idea would have been to copy the Vietspam PM to one of the mods so they could delete the senders account but I didn't want to bother them.

As active members of this Forum I believe it is
our responsibility to report Spam to the Mods.
The Mods can't be everywhere all the time and
we can be an extra set of eyes for them.

100% right. Good point. I always report spam posts but was lazy about the PMs. Turned on PMs again will report any spam PMs

Yes, reporting spam posts helps us see them. While we do catch most of them, your help makes getting rid of the spam much quicker :)

I've had 2 spam PM messages, did not know how to report them till I looked for and found the report button. :banghead:
