Are you sure you have JL-54 diodes? When did you order them? SenKat announced he was selling them just a few days ago.
The difference between the old ones and these ones is simply that these appear to be more powerful, the old ones could be driven safely only up to 250mA giving an output of about 150mW, the new ones give about 175mW at the same current and it looks like they can be safely driven up to 300mA giving an output of about 200mW. :o Here's the thread.
 





Its really hard to tell how powerful it is but ill try to give you an idea. It can burn a hole through a black garbage bag in about 10-15 seconds. No luck lighting a match at any distance or focus even with a black tip. It can get black plastics warm at about 10 seconds but thats all it can do. Im trying to figure if the diode got damaged or maybe something is wrong with the mini mag. I think the mini mag uses 3v at around 100-150mA+ which should be enough.

edit: im not smart enough to do a dorcy laser because im not that good with electronics and ill probably end up breaking the diode so I tried a mini mag mod to see how it turned out.
 
The mini mag doesn't regulate the current or voltage, so you can't say it puts out 3v at 100 - 150mA, it all depends on how used up the batteries are. Are you sure you're focusing the dot to the smallest spot?
I guess rog is right and the diode is getting so much power that its performance is dropping, the only option for you right now is to get the diode out of the mini mag before you kill it and build a Dorcy laser, use the links on the other page. ;)

EDIT: I just saw your edit, the dorcy laser is the easiest laser you can possibly make, there's a complete walk through video for it. If you can't put your diode in a descent host it will either die soon or just keep dropping in performance like it's been doing.
 
Ill try, and yes ive focused the dot to smallest it will go. Two more questions: if any one has an extra sony diode could they put it in a mini mag to see the results, and if you dont want to because you think you will burn it out i understand, and how many mA does a mini mag use when the batteries are at or near full charge.

I ordered them some month ago from a korean seller on ebay. Initially he called these diode " slv1236" but on the datasheet included is written "slv1236-jl54" (not 1239).
I think that this diodes are very resistant. Once by a distraction I linked one to 4,5 v battery(for few seconds) without any current limiter or regolator(I repeat: A MISTAKE!!). The diode became very hot(almost burned my fingers skin) and the light was very strong. I though the diode was died after this accident, but still working even now.

Just because your diode survived that doesn't mean it's a strong diode, that significantly shortened its lifespan and now it's going to die sooner. If you didn't get those diodes from Greg, then I doubt they're the new JL-54 diodes.
 
yea well i got the laser to work now its lights matches and burns black plastic.. i had to focus the dot to much smaller(didn't think it could get smaller before). I dont keep it on for more than 30 seconds or else it will get warm. Also, are the new jl54 diodes better than the slv1236 diodes because i have the slv diode
 
See, I told you to check your focuss like three times. ;D
And yeah, the new ones are better since it looks like you can drive them at mcuh higher currents and thus get greater outputs.
 
yea thats what I thought, any one know the mA consumption of a mini mag at near full battery charge?
