Sony Optiarc DVD RW laser quality for project?

hi im starting a little project using a host and some bits i already have, please can someone help? I have a sony optiarc dvd rw will that laser be suitable? Also what sort of Mw and Nm should i expect from it? Thanks in advance

Not sure on the mW's, but most DVD drives have a diode in them which output in the 640nm-650nm range.

Ah ok cheers mate more curiosity than anything, being red if the end result has decent burning power itll be 200mw+ ish i suppose? Its early learning days lol i have a lazerer 1.2w 445nm and just fancy giving it a go myself.

It's possible. While burning might help give an estimate of how powerful a diode is, the only sure fire way to know it's true output is to have it LPM.
