That's a good point. even with a 250mW diode limit, blu-ray write speed will be limited to 4x
 





and for $1200 or so, you can already buy 4X BluRay burners!!!
that's not the sort of amount you'd want to invest and have fried by the tiniest little ESD spark.
 
Oh well, prices on those will surely come down to acceptable levels. The first generations of CD and DVD burners were horribly expensive too. I remember using 1x speed cd burners that cost more than $1200 back in the day.

With 2x blu ray writers already below $500 retail, i'm sure we'll see them even below $100 in a few years... especially when something with even greater disc capacities hits the market.

The only pit for us laser enthousiasts is that they went from 660 to 405 nm in one jump, both on the edges of the visible spectrum. Something with this kind of power at a more visible wavelength would make very impressive laser beams, but probably won't become available.

Wow. So... remind me why consumers are expected to pay $2000 for a sonar.
 
I remember reading somewhere that a 337nm(or so) diode is about to be developed.As for the sonar, I don't think it's selling very well.It's not even a burner diode, it's one of those ps3 5mW-ish diodes everybody uses for diy(except me, cause I don't have the means nor the money to get my hands on one now :'().And they're promising 30mW out of it.If it really outputs 30mW I guess they're overdriving the s**t out of it and you'll be left with a nice shiny barrel and an aixiz module.
 
20mW, not 30. I actually think they use/used blu-ray players... back when they were $1000 something. The players are now obviously down to a fraction of that and yet a price drop eludes the sonar.

Diodes respond decently to being over-driven for very short periods of time, which is why they decided pulsed operation was most appropriate for that tiny diode.
 
Thing is, the sonar is pulsed. They are managing not to kill it because it's pulse driven.

And it's still crap.
 
Is it possible to get protective goggles for IR? I do nto think so but I would just want to be sure.
 
you most certainly can... talk to pseudonomen137 if you'd like to buy some.
good ones offer almost 100% transparency at visible ranges too!
if you're playing with IR, i'd consider IR goggles a must.
