But I can't see why the software can't read as low as the OPHIR head can...

The OPHIR Head can read below 0mW...

The Arduino lacks a negative voltage reference. As you are aware, an external ADC is not in use.

@OP: For whoever buys this, I can pass along a firmware upgrade to attenuate noise and buy you additional resolution.

@rhd: I can get you a better copy of the software, I wrote it.

Ah, well, I'd expect you to be well-versed in things such as ADC's and voltage reference, but to each his own.

...but if you want to learn about such things, the Arduino is a great place to start!
