So did I just waste some coin on this red laser?

Re: So did I just waste some coin on this red lase

You could use a red uncollimated laser diode by itself which will make for a very bright led and because it's not focused it would pose no threat.

To get visible red light cheapest is the dilda laser, 200mW and its so much more than 4oz. best you could do is to keep the LEDs and use the laser in the midle to see the direction.

Thanks for the thought, and interest guys.

The model is electric FWIW. Also the light would have only been triggered for a second or so to just help maintain orientation.

Currently the fuse <on the latest venture> alone has just under 100 white LEDs on it. I suspect the wing will have double that.

As for attracting the wrong kind of attention, the model is flown in a very rural area at a AMA field. If we wanted to create a stir we would build something like this ;D <PM me for link as with the 10 required posts I'm not allowed to share>

Again thanks for all your help.

Re: So did I just waste some coin on this red lase

5mW red laser beams are visible in the right conditions outside but you have to
1) point the laser at a small angle towards or away from your face and
2) know where the beam is likely to be when pointing it at the sky. It's hard to see the beam unless you're not looking directly at the line it casts.

Re: So did I just waste some coin on this red lase

Just strap a 30mW greenie along the centre pointing forwards, they're cheap on DealExtreme, quite tough, should be very visible at night, and are safer than a similarly-visible red. You don't need 2 lasers unless you fly it on steep banking manouvers, which I'd not try at night...

You will also need some of your White LEDs on the fuselage or you could confuse which end of the
beam the plane is.... 8-)
