Hi this is my second DIY (others being here (child proof burner) and here (micro laser))

These are now for sale! they are around $35+ shipping each for the 5mW version! there is 1 more available and 1 sold pending funds! (NB the first one took 1 day to build the second may take up to 4 weeks depending on laser power selection).

This is my water proof shock resistant laser. Its been power verified by the laser man (thanks!) and is outputting a child safe 3mW (it was at 18mW tuned down to make it child safe!). It is also 100% IR free with the WL IR filter (thanks murrat!)

It has a clicky on/off switch and runs off 2X AA (which sits inside the torch housing not on the module part).

Pics to follow!

UPDATE Total so far of 5 have been made, 3 sold and one given away as a gift. The one I have left is dive proof 30mW green and has been tested in the following conditions:
- Dead sea
- Frozen in a block of ice
- desert
- +400m

Finished product:

Re: Shock resistant waterproof DIY green torch las

custom circuitry:
as the torch is screw together any fixed wires broke (even when soldered twice and then heavily glued!) under the compression and twisting forces.

I used the metal plate connected to the head of the laser for the +ve and the metal cap to get the -ve. This allowed the twisting to occur whilst providing electrical contact.

This contains the driver, module IR filter etc.

Re: Shock resistant waterproof DIY green torch las

nice 5 dot! This I assume is caused by reflection from within the torch lens bouncing off the existing reflector to give this nice horizontal multi dot effect :)

I think it looks nicer like this :D

Re: Shock resistant waterproof DIY green torch las

just to show size (this is no little tiny torch!)

It was surprising how little space there was inside though...

last pic (to avoid confusion) -ve contact inside the torch sitting on-top of the battery pack.
(+ve connector which leads to plate is on the right inside the torch)

I'm building small and heavy :)

Re: Shock resistant waterproof DIY green torch las

well at least it has one of the correct attributes :P

but when you've finished the laser you have to ask yourself one important question:

Can I cause blunt trauma with what I've created?

LOL it will create a trauma no doubt about that.

Re: Shock resistant waterproof DIY green torch las

it hits 4mw for about 5 seconds then drops to 3mw and seems to stay there

Re: Shock resistant waterproof DIY green torch las

Holly crap that thing is huge!!!!!!!! :o May I ask why you wanted it tuned down to 3mW? Are you going to give it to a kid?

Yup :) as you can probably tell I make only large hefty things

If its worth doing its worth overdoing ;D

I had it tuned as I wanted to give it to a child (under supervision) so I wanted it eye safe... so I really thank andy_con for that! But for only 3mW its really bright and the beam is visible in a dimly lit room and totally visible at night!

Re: Shock resistant waterproof DIY green torch las

mark II which is being sold and is dive proof:
