Several laser diode queries!

Several queries regarding 5.6 can 9xx InGaAs laser diodes. Some may sound vague and / or funny, do excuse. I'm new to the world of lasers!

1) If I have a 100mW diode that I wish to pulse, what max mW can I pulse it to? I wish to pulse the laser for 250ns.

2) If I need to pulse the diode to 10W, do I need to take a diode that is rated 10W?

3) Do I need to specify whether I want a CW or pulsed diode when I place an order?

4) Any suggestions on InGaAs laser diode manufacturers?

You could have might as well answered the question, moderator would move it to right section anyway.

Regarding the questions, you have given us very little information. Is your diode rated 100mW CW or Pulse? If CW, you need to search for Pulse power information, because it depends on alot of factors to be estimated.

Yes, you would need to take a diode that is rated for 10W peak power, however you need to take the time into account too, for what lenght of pulse is the diode rated,

You need to choose the diode that's capable of meeting your requirements, pick that one and buy it, or contact the manufacturer or whatever is neccessary, that also depends on where you are buying it from, unfortunately I do not know any manufacturers that have what you need.

Perhaps that one site, what was it called, guys? Rotechnic lasers or something?

You will have to consult the datasheet for the specific diode. Some diodes can be ran at much higher pulse power compared to CW, but for others there is little difference between CW and pulse maximum outputs.

Yes, that's the one I had in mind, Proto, thanks.

Could you provide a link here too?

Thank you all for your prompt responses!!

@Eduaimonium - The diode is rated 100mW, and I guess I will hae to get one that's pulsed and rated10W, to pulse it to that power. Am I correct?

@Benm - Checked data sheets of several diodes, didn't really understand much!! Most don;t follow a fixed format for stating properties of their products. More in Question 2, hereunder.

@Prototype - Thanks for the supplier name!!

@Bluefan - Thanks for the link!!

A few other queries;
1) What is the difference between single mode and multi mode diodes?

2) What sort of a questionnaire should I make for a supplier so he lists info in a format where I have all the information required, for my next purchase? I have enlisted the following, should I add anything to this list?

CONTINUOUS WAVE
Wavelength
Tolerance
Change in nm due to change in temp
Diode Type (HeNe, InGaAs etc)
Drive Current
Threshold Current
Package Type
Operating Temp range
Connector

PULSED WAVE
Wavelength
Tolerance
Change in nm due to change in temp
Pulse Width
Pulse Frequency
Max pulse watts
Diode Type (HeNe, InGaAs etc)
Drive Current
Threshold Current
Package Type
Operating Temp range
Connector
