The NUBM44 is a very hot diode at the currents necessary to get 7+ watts out. I would have suggested a different host as these put out something like 28 watts of waste heat and for a decent run time needs a hefty copper heat sink. If the stainless steel is hot to the touch, the diode is much hotter as SS isn't a very good conductor of heat. The diodes are very inexpensive though, so I hope you got a very good deal on it. With cylindrical lenses and then a BE these do much better than just a diode and BE. Good luck and I hope it lives a long life for you.
