RPL- Adjustable or not?

Hi all laserfans,

In the future (1 or 1½ year) I wanna buy a powerful 532 nm portable laser. My budget will probably be max $1000.
I have decided that it´s gonna be a LG or a Opto, simply because I think it´s the two best companies.
Here are the three opportunitys (as I see it):
Optotronics RPL-260.
Laserglow Aries 225.
Laserglow Aries 125 with X10Dr beam expander.

I would use the laser for both burning and pointing outside.
Which one would you choose?

Id say get as much power as you can afford. I would go with the rpl over the aries because the rpl is rechargeable. Laserglow is a good company from what i hear, but there prices usually turn me away.

The thing that caused me to chose an RPL over a Herc was the battery type. 3 D-size batteries vs a single rechargeable 18650 Lithium ion=No contest. The Aries lasers take C-size batteries which are even more annoying.
If you have $3000+ to spend and you want THE MOST powerful hand held green laser that money can buy the Hercules is good. If you want something smaller/cheaper and overall more practical you should get an RPL. It won't disappoint you.

A friend of mine has the Aries-175 and it eats batteries like a fat chick at an all-you-can-eat. It's one of the reasons I bought a Spartan, rechargeable 18650s.

I didn´t choose the Hercules because it´s too big and it uses 3 D size batteries.

But what about a Aries-125 with a beam expander? Wouldn´t it be just as powerful as the RPL-260?

Hi Amnizu

Would a Spartan 250 be just as bright as the RPl-260?
I have heard that it is not a "burner" because of it´s big beam diameter (2 mm)
Which one has the best duty cycle?

Spartans are awesome... 2mm beam diameter is fine mate. Especially if it comes with good divergence. :P
But I'd definitely go Optotronics.

Don't get me wrong, the Spartans are a fine laser that perform at or above spec, but not as far above spec as an Optotronics RPL will. The beam diameter, at 2-3mm at aperture, is pretty big, but I've never had a problem burning anything at all with it. I have a youtube section full of burning videos, actually. The divergence is also good at ~1.2mRad.

Again, nothing against the Spartans, but I'd go with an RPL just for their very very thorough testing and burn-in process, as well as customer service.

Ok,

I am definately gonna buy a RPL-260 or an 300 (if they get cheaper?)
That leads me to my next question:
Should i choose the adjustable or the normal one? It seems like a good idea with the adjustable output, but what do you guys think?

Difinitely get the adjustable version. You can adjust the diode current for maximum efficiency and control the output. You can use level 1 for pointing outside and a higher level for burning. Make sure you get some kind of laser goggles if you want to use it for burning.
 
I( have the rpl  260 adjustable run it on setting  5-7 burns great batteries last a long time
i wouldnt want the non adjust then you would only be able to run full blast 5 minutes on then a couple off I believe then again I dont think Ive ran mine over two minutes yet on med setting this thing is BAAAADDDD once again Jack Rules
