Ok so here's my idea. Build a host with a female audio connector. Build a module that connects to a male audio (1/8") plug. That way if I want to change colors or power I could just unplug the laser/driver and plug in a new one into the host.

It's doable, but you can just aswell build a battery tube for each head as the head is the hard part.And that way you can have all of them on at once. :P

This is just like building a bunch of hosts except without space for batteries. It will be more difficult and expensive to make the modules than it will be to just make a complete laser because of all the custom work involved. And at the end of the day, it is less useful since you can only use one laser at a time.

Doomed to failure.

I don't see the need for this and it will inevitably lead to mistakes - it's better to just use 1 host and have multiple heads for it with different colours, powers etc. That way you don't accidentally overvolt your flexdrive when attatching to bigger (7.2v) hosts or think you've blown a diode when really it's just not being driven hard enough (when moving to a smaller host). Nice idea in principle but in reality has no use. A product only sells if there's a market there to sell to.

If you're buying a host, but want to make 2 seperate heads you generally buy 2 whole torches.... the saving of not having to buy a second "body" becomes irrelevant really.If you had a driver in the body, with a pre-set resistor in each head that auto-sets the driver, then that would actually save money (drivers aren't cheap!) A system like that may not be doomed to failure, and indeed I'm intrigued about that as a concept...

That problem is easy enough to get around. Just color code the female and male audio plugs so that the modules with the proper drivers will match up with proper voltage hosts. ( I plan on using a lot of adjustable drivers anyway.) This isn't and won't be for sale it's just for me to easily play around with. It's a little more work but I could easily reuse diodes in other projects without having to buy new ones or unsolder the old ones everytime I wanted to play in a new host. I could just install an audio jack and set the driver to the right setting. (Or use a color coded non adjustable driver) This is not for the masses just for hobbyist to play with.

maybe hes going to use a rkcstr driver with 2x 3.6v batteries? that would be safe + provide enough voltage for both phr and red diodes......

i like rkcstr drivers :)

Nobody that knows anything about knives, buys these things. They know all the money is in the blades, not the handle.
It would be cheaper to buy four full knives. They would be stronger and more dependable without the attachment mechanism.
The concept is a classic expensive complex solution, for a problem that doesn't exist.


However, if you can design a handheld laser following this design concept:

Then we're talking about a whole different (and much more successful) kind of animal.

It would be cheaper to buy four full knives. They would be stronger and more dependable without the attachment mechanism.
The concept is a classic expensive complex solution, for a problem that doesn't exist.
Not to mention that the hook-knife/seatbelt-cutter detachable blade completely kills the purpose of such a knife. :P


But anyway, playing with a new host often means a whole new heatsink design and positioning of the driver.You can't just install a phono jack and use the same head. :-/ Well you can but it will look wierd ,defeating the purpose of having a nice new host. :-/

Actually, the knife set is for hunting, so the hook blade would be a gut zipper, for field dressing game (it's name says it all).

If you're going to use a connector, then use a bayonet mount BNC connector or better yet, a screw down power connector.
Along with better shielding insulation between conductors, they'll give you a positive lock, that can't wiggle loose and will also act as support for the head. -You can get them at Radio Shack.

(I never said "don't make it", I just wanted to be clear it wasn't very practicle. -If you're going to make it anyway, then at least gold plate the thing.)
