And then someone comes into town and opens up a fast food joint serving real burgers.

That's not entirely accurate either. It's like nobody has ever heard of burgers until some crazy dude writes a story where the characters eat burgers, people love it, then scientists find a tiny piece of evidence that might lead to the eventual discovery of cows, which causes a web site to say that we will all be eating burgers soon.
