i thought 7 Volts was good when using the LM317T. i will still get the same mA wether i run 7 or 8 volts right?

Right, but regular RCR123's would run longer. As soon as the voltage is less than 6 the regulator will begin to drop out. The nominal voltage of your batteries is actually 3.2 volts, and the nominal voltage of the regular RCR's is 3.6 volts.
