After some reasearch I think it does have an IR filter.

EDIT: And apparently idiots wanting to pop ballons (I don't see why they can't just use a little pin) remove it.

Go back to radioshack and tell them thats a myth. Just kidding j/k but I had been told the same thing at radioshack (back in the day). : The IR from that laser pen is pretty negligible (only a few mW's).
