What I do is to move everything to their positions, zero and then test. If I'm going to hold the laser with my hand I will zero it while holding the laser in my hand. Or use a tripod, which works a lot better.

But yeah, the thing works as a human presence detector. You can clearly a disturbance due to a person passing in front of it a few meter away.
