OK, well I'm new to this whole thing and I am planning on making a MXDL laser with DDL's driver. In his tutorial--in the materials section-- it gave a link to the MXDL and it was a 5 watt, instead of 3 watt.

-I'm wondering if I am able to use the 3 watt, and if so, is there any difference between the two and is there anything that I have to do different than the regular 5 watt mod?

Thanks.

as long as the module and the correct driver fit in the mxdl, the 3W or 5W won't matter. The rating is on the output of the led.

Not sure which MXDL you have there with out a picture or something. But the one linked in DDL's thread, comes all apart, including the top ring. This makes it easy to mod. The other thing to take note of in choosing a host, is the battery supply. Does yours fit 2 X 3.6 volt RCR123 rechargeable batteries?

Well I cant post links yet, but I was thinking of the 3-watt MDXL (which only holds one CR123A) on DealExtreme.com versus the MXDL 5W Lumileds CR123A 6V Flashlight on DealExtreme. (mainly because of price.)

BTW- I haven't bought the flashlight yet

Thanks for the help so far.

Well after looking at it more closely, I think I'll just go with the 5 watt, because its bigger and fits the 2 batts in it.

Thanks.

Are you planning on using one of Jayrob's great heatsinks in this build? If you are, I think you will need to get the 5W

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171~r.82876835 (2 @ CR123)

Or, he also has heatsinks for this model

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4171~r.82876835 [3 @ AAA (but using 3.6V 10440's in place of the AAA's)]

Peace,
dave

I was thinking about buying one of Jayrob's heatsinks for the MXDL but there too expensive for me maybe if it was like $10.:-/ I'll probably just make one..

IF you make one, be sure it isn't just a couple of washers stuck together - heat gathers inbetween areas like that, and will fester, and KILL the diode :( If you are going to make one, do it right - either grab one of Jayrob's heatsinks, or make one yourself out of solid aluminum

10 bucks????? Even the dilda lazer is worth more than that.

i think he was talking about the heatsinks jayrob makes...not the lasers he makes....sorry, your comment on the dilda confused me...

Oops, nvm then, I guess I should read closer next time. ;D
The "dilda lazer" is the DX 200mW red laser, a member here "baptized" lol the laser with that name due to its phallic shape. :P
