Questions about the requirments of some stuff to make a laser..

Hello. This is the same old thread about the Fresnel lens.. I just decided to update it so i could add more questions with out creating a ocean of threads around lol.

1-I see when anyone is extracting the laser diode out of a DVD Burner.. They remove it out of the heat sink.. That big thing around it.. Then why? what's the reason??

For size? i have no problems with size since i am going to use a large container for the lovely laser..



2- What is that tube.. The iron tube that they insert the diode in it

What's its use? and can i use the diode with out it??



That's all for now! once i get the answers i will start on the laser and tell you guys how it goes! Thank you..!!

Those Fresnel lenses are best for concentrating large areas of light into a point source. For example, concentrating solar energy to melt metal. It'd be a huge waste for you to cut up that large television-sourced Fresnel lens.

As for your diode, you won't get any greater benefit than if you stick a tiny Aixiz lens in front of your diode. Why? Because the diode is putting out light from a window that is about 1mm in diameter. That'd only hit a tiny section of the Fresnel lens. If you're thinking you could make a wide beam with the Fresnel lens, you might be able to, but the output from a laser diode is so little (for a given area) that it wouldn't be worth it either. Glass lenses are pretty cheap and you can use that instead, without wasting a large Fresnel lens which is good for other stuff.

I'd keep your Fresnel lens for melting stuff from the sun, and get some large glass lenses if you want to experiment with making large beams.

You can use it to make a ridiculously large laser beam, but that's about it.
