I have a diode that I finally got around to extracting. I'm not too sure what it came from because I extracted the sled two years ago. I'm not sure what the mW is. Basically... I ordered an aixiz housing, but I'm confused on the nm of the housing versus the diode. And the driver setup. I'm a quick learner but I cannot find the information to fill in the blanks. I'm going to pick up parts for the driver in the next few days. I don't want to blow the diode with the driver. I want to figure out the mW of the diode. The nm. The nm and the housing. And the current to make the diode burn. But I don't have a diode measure tool thing. Any tips or links that can help?

How do the red diode look like ? with or without a can.

you probably extracted from a dvd player, meaning that the diode is probably infra red. and it will be imposible to figure out what the diode is, what mw etc. best i would recommend is get a ghostdrive, and an LPC-826 which can output about 300mw on 450-500mA from the ghostdrive. and the aixiz housing is pretty much universal, there is no nm difference. if you over power the diode, it will blow/LED, so best to get a new red diode (the LPC-826)

hmm, have you taken it out the heatsink yet? I'm sure someone here will recognize it.
I didn't want to bust it quite yet. Do u just pull on the terminals from the back?

NOO, definately not! by doing so you will most surely destroy it. get 2 pliers, grab the heatsink from opposite ends, and twist in opposite directions to loosen the diode. if you do it right, the diode should fall out.
another method would be to get a very small file, and cut through the heatsink, however, make sure you dont cut the diode in anyway, otherwise this will also break it.

Well thank god I asked. I will try it here in a bit. On my way home. That's why it's still in the heat sink I couldn't find a way to remove it online. I also have a DVD-RW DL burner that I can use because I need a sata converter. But that can be a second experiment some other time.

not all burners have a diode, iv bought many burners from junk yard sales, none of them had a diode, but maybe yours will. and yes, it is good you didnt pull on the pins, that would have been fatal for the diode. but good luck anyway, let us now how it goes
This is the diode i'm dealing with. The iR diode is encased in some weird heatsink but ive tested both and the iR one does illuminate but i have no need for an iR laser. I just got home and extracted it. The diode was obviously encased in thermal paste so I had to do some scraping before i got to loosen it up.

wow, good extracting. also, in the first pic, you see in the thread,that glass cube. dont throw it away, its probably a usefull optic which you can use in a later project perhaps, also, try and keep all the other glass things from the sled safe, they may come in handy one day

Edit: Im actually not sure because Liteon is a dvd player and I know for a fact it came from a burner because my friend gave me two of them to get the diodes from. But thats the sled. Not sure if its OEM or not though

hmm, i might pass, i have a LPC-826 outputting about 300mw so im happy, this however, not many people know it, it might only be a 20mw or so, but thanks anyway, hope your build goes good
How would I start to see how this works? Or test for power. Just build it into a normal laser and adjust the pot?

um yeah thats the hard part. you see, you dont know what diode it is, so if you power it to high, it will blow. for example, say its a low power red that needs a max of 50mA to run, and you start giving it 500mA, you see what i mean? i would recommend a groove2 driver from flaminpyro, and also grab a test load off him. wire evrything up, connect to a battery supply of 2 lithium batteries (or about 7v) and slowly turn the pot, when you see the diode at its brightest, stop turning the pot, and turn it down slightly, to give it longer life. thats all i can say, as i dont know what diode it is.
p.s if your turning the pot and the laser starts to go down in brightness, stop turning and turn it backwards untill you get it like i mentioned above.
