Ps3 vs xbox hd drive help

Hey im a noob here and just had a couple of questions like

how the ps3 lens compares to a xbox 360 hd drive for a laser pointer?

how much mw / mn?

what type of module to use?

whats the best driver to use?

any help at all would be apriceated evan if you just point where to look.
 





Are you talking about the little lens that's below where you put the DVD? Or the laser diode? If you're asking about the diode, then this dude made a bluray with a diode from an xbox 360 HD Drive. He killed the first diode but he succeeded on the second one. Only he couldn't go above 30mA.
Most PS3 laser diodes can be driven at a max of 40mA which I assume gives out more power than the xbox diode. Every diode is different and it might have been possible that flogged got a pair of underpowered ones. There just hasn't been too many blurays made from xbox HD drives so we don't know much about them.
I would go with a PS3 diode since there's more info about them.
They're between 400nm - 410nm, maybe as much as 415nm.
The power depends on the diode and at what current you drive it at, but most will put out around 10mW when driven at 40mA.

That was vary helpful, although i was expecting to beable to get more power than that out of the diode. thank you for your help but i do belive i need to do more research before i decide if should use a blu-ray diode
 
Bluray diodes are always wanted because of their color, not for their burning capabilities, if you want to burn stuff then get a 20x DVD drive, build the same driver which I posted on my other post and you'll be able to burn crap like no tomorrow. ;D
It would be nice to have a bluray burner though, a couple of people have bought bluray DVD burners and have made lasers that output an excess to 100mW. The only problem is that even the cheapest bluray burner that has been found costs 250 bucks. :(
 
i think xbox 360 and a ps3 diode are the same, i cant tell the difference i just bought 4 xbox 360 drives and thay are all working, and its really awsome, and i use a ddl driver with a 33ohm resistor :)
 
See there you go, like I said people haven't made enough lasers from xbox drives, so maybe flogged got underpowered diodes. Who knows?
Jake, please report if any of them die and what the cause was.
 
i will do, they preform just like the ps3 diode but ill keep every one up to date if ones goes bad ;)
 
Yeah i think i will just get a 20x dvd burner does it make a difference what brand i purches like lite-on, soney, or samsung.
 
Of course it does, some burners have some weird shaped diodes in them which you can't use. Samsung drives are known to have some weird diodes. Lite-ons are known to have normal open can diodes but they have a shorter dye than the long open can diodes and they don't give you as much power.
Look at this thread for a cheap 20x DVD burner from which you can harvest the diode very easily.

The diode you'll be looking for in a 20x burner should be a long open can diode and it should look like this.

cool thank you for the info and link vary helpful, but in reading in the forum unless im mistaken with the open can diode i will need to find the proper lens right?
