Pot modding question

I'm going to be pot modding several laser's, including two 532nm 5mW laser's, and a 405nm 5mw laser. I'd like to not kill my diode the second I mod it, but i want it to be brighter then it originally would be. If anyone would know how to do this properly and safely, i would appreciate it.

On a side note, I'm worried about this because i'm buying from DX and the shipment will probably take 3 week's. And I want to avoid having to buy and order more to replace the ones I destroyed in the process, and or just having the diode die on me faster.

The best way to pot mod a laser and not kill it is to not do it in the first place.

There is No safe way to pot mod a laser. Do it at your own risk but understand that most lasers are already set to the max safe current. If you increase that current you will kill the laser.

I didnt mean safe towards my health, i meant safely for the laser. And thanks for the input. Im not looking to over-due it a lot, I just want to get it a little brighter then what it originally is. Since the laser's that im modding are only 8 bucks, I dont really see the loss in trying, plus i have 2 coming, so if i mess up one, i still have another

There is a pretty big risk when you play with the pot. Many members will tell you the same thing.

You "can" try to turn the pot on your laser just slightly but it will not give you any noticeable difference in color and it will shorten the life of your laser drastically if you don't kill it first.

I say "Do it at your own risk" because its not safe (for your laser).

Just save yourself the trouble now. Don't pot mod .

We have no way of knowing what the max current of those low powered diodes are. If there already maxed out, touching the pot would kill them. Especially if its a cheap small few turn pot. With a slight turn you may double to quadrupole the current. If you don't mind buying another one you can always try it. However, not the safest thing to do.

If you want a high powered laser, buy a properly rated diode.

I live in the US and have ordered.... 4? Either 3 or 4 >5mw lasers (50, 50, 130, 200) from foreign, and have never had one confiscated :wave:

Hmm, Interesting, What website(s) did you use? I had plans to just buy the high powered ones as themselves, but for the money i would have spent for them, i didnt want to take the chance of them being confiscated and losing all my money. lol. There getting stricter on the law's now.

Long story short. Dont potmod (also known as potbreak). Almost any common website except for DX will sell lasers of any power and ship them to the US and 99% of the time customs never notices. They usually label them as flashlights. Websites who will sell to the US include but are not limited to:
