Very cool! So, these would be used for things like measuring earthquake displacement over time and large distance, or something like that?

It was used on a very large milling and routing machine to make wing spars for aircraft.
I now find out it was the Y axis position feedback device. This machine was massive its
axes travel was measured in yards.

They get the power and signals coming and going.

Right on the money. The coaxial connectors provide a CNC control the position feedback to control the axis motion.
Go to this position, at a given speed (feedrate) and power. Pretty cool use of a laser in manufacturing.
