I would like to get a couple low power lasers to use for demonstrations, but it's a thing that is impossible to search for because all the lasers are labelled <5mW regardless of actual power.

Does anyone here know of anywhere to source such a laser, ideally not too expensive, I'm really just looking for a worse version of a normal pointer, not a lab-grade laser with a handful of certificates that'll be more expensive than anything I currently own.

"Optotronic" and "Z Bolt" are two companys that come to mind. The will probably be around $30.
They sell true 5mW 532nm laser pointers. Its more expensive to buy a true lower power 5mW than the over powered Ebay ones that can do 40 to 80mW's.

They have IR filters so the rating is basicly true..
Optotronics owner will answer the phone so any questions just call him as he is a nice man.
Z Bolts websight is confusing so maby call them also if needed.

Thank you.

I should have mentioned that I am in Europe, not that shipping will be a deal breaker, but it will easily double the price and more after import and shipping and VAT is paid.

Optotronics looks good, unfortunately the 5mW option are listed as not in stock at the moment.

Z bolt is too expensive, with their cheapest options for laser pointers being $128, but it doesn't look like they even sell internationally without needing to contact them for quotes.

Try Roithner in Austria --they have a large number of pens many wavelengths and many 5mW or less
https://www.roithner-laser.com/laser.html
"Roithner Lasertechnik offers high quality violet (405 nm), blue (445-473 nm), green (520-532 nm), orange (589-594 nm), red (635-655 nm) and infrared (780-1550 nm) laser pointers with output powers ranging 1 mW up to 1W."

Edit:
I took a look at the Roithner Austrian laser web site price ist---you only see a 405nm <1mW when you click on the laser pointers in the price list menu but if you scroll down a bit on the price list you will see the other pens offered and prices for them.

I any case good luck finding one that suits your purpose and pocket.

I think I saw that Z bolt had the true pen type pointer for around $50 or less.

I thought Optptronics had a Euro pricing under the US $.
They do re stock there laser pointers and I beleive they are made in house. I can them for you if you want if the time zone is a issue..

Edit: It looks like the company that Encap gave the link for is the best bet.

Thank you, this company seems ideal, I will have a look through the options.

MPJA has 5 pack for 3 bucks "<5mW"

Bro, "shadowlasers" carry both 1mw and 5mw pens for under 10 bones.

Have you measured these? Their design is the same as all the other cheap laser pointers that come out of china, they all say <5mW due to regulations, but virtually none of them are, they are usually many many times more powerful.

I do custom power levels for any of my existing hosts/wavelengths:

For what this is for it's unfortunately outside of my budget, I just wanted a set of basic colors that is low enough power that I can relatively safely show someone else interesting laser properties without a second set of goggles. After A quick look the cheapest I saw was I think 50 USD, after fees, taxes and shipping that's going to end up nearer to 100.

When I next look at expanding my collection just for myself, that's a different matter and you're definitely one of the places I'll be looking :)
