perfect cheap heatsink

Not a bad idea - my only concern would be the adhesive that is on the tape....I would worry that the adhesive would keep the heat in, rather than passing it along. My fears could be incorrect - but I don;t know !

How exactly would copper tape be useful as a heatsink?

probably wrapping it around the aixis module i would think. then you would be able to adjust how large the heatsink is and fit it perfectly to your case (like the flashlight or somethin)

This is only 1.5 thou's of an inch thick X 250 thou's wide. the thermal capacity is small and wrapping it without air gaps (thermal breaks) would be a nightmare.

I think that Senkat has hit the nail on the head here about the glue insulating it as well. I think you need to look elsewhere TBH.
