I wonder if it can light matches!

It can't even light a match as a complete system because the beam is expanded to a huge diameter to keep divergence acceptable. The laser before the output telescope would be great though, 4 watts of very pretty orange light - its the sodium line we all know from those orange streetlights.

I suppose these lasers must be very difficut/expensive to construct or operate as you never see them outside astronomy, while their color woud be very desireable for show purposes and such.

ESO astronomers have been able to create an 'artificial star' 90 km high in the atmosphere, using a laser beam. This star can be put at any point in the sky, and it enables the adaptive optics of the VLT telescope to be used throughout the visible sky. Until now, adaptive optics required the light of a strong natural star as a reference; now, the artificial star will do this. The new technology enlarges the field of vision of the most powerful telescope on Earth
 
That's sick!!! Never knew about adaptive optics. Pretty high-tech stuff there.
 
Maybe this technology has been in use for some time now, & has been the reason for a lot of "UFO" sightings. If they are able to accomplish this without the lasers 'beam' being visible, it would sure explain a lot of the "UFO" sightings that look like dancing lights in the sky. IDK, just thinkin' while typin' LOL..........rob
 
That is one heck of a system. Three minutes twenty for very pretty yellow thin beams.. Wow !! I never thought it could be that useful for astronomy.
