Overall best "burning" pointer

is there some way to calculate how many mW's a DVD burner is by just knowing its "x"?
16x etc
I found a 20x that was only 50$

You need to make sure the DVD burner does not have one of those weird diodes in it. The easiest I have found to harvest an open can out of is a Pioneer 112D burner. But I would recommend for starters you get a couple of SenKat's diodes.

You will not have to harvest them and they are quite powerful...can be run with 250ma's which will give an output around 175mw's.

You will also need to make a driver. Everything you need to know is in the Experiments and Modifications section of this forum. If you are serious about building your own red, I suggest you put some time aside and read through that section of the forum.

you are going to love that laser once you finaly get it built, its just so satisfying to see something that you put together out of a bunch of parts end up working, and boy do they work... lighting matches, poping baloons from 30ft, igniniting cap gun caps, firework fuses.. you name it.

I'm a newbie... after reading posts from the forums, I am now excited to make one for myself. However, I am having difficulty in getting the diodes (our country sell it, problem is, it is too expensive). Any suggestions?
