That took you a long time to figure out, considering how old this thread is!
The consencus nowadays is that you should wire everything solid before powering it up, and discharge any caps before making an attempt.
Also, keep in mind that there are far superior circuits to the DDL driver. On my better ones, hot swapping the diode is feasible, though i wouldn't recommed it just in case something goes wrong.
