O-Like Blu-Ray diode driver

The O-Like Blu-Ray driver says 4.8V output, but I thought GGWs needed higher voltage than that, over 5V. Does anyone know if these work for GGWs or SF-AW210 diodes?
 





i would stay away from those drives if i were you.
people have had nothing but problems with that driver.

Not true, billg519 used those drivers for bluray, but only for PHR and SF-AW since the limit of the driver is 200mA, at which some instabilities may occur and not worth risking your expensive $50 laser diode.

Rated output is not important, boost converters as such boost voltage until the Vf od load is breached, so your diode can have 10V drop, it would still work.
The driver would draw insane amount of current to boost to 10V though, if higher current is used.

All that matters is the current you preset it, voltage is auto-sensed like with all commonly used drivers.

BTW, why do you think I am making my own drivers, even boost ones :D

I don't think I am ready to trust my diodes to $7 boost driver... it says the limit is 200mA current...
Which is not good anyhow.

But for PHR build, I'd trust it enough.
For any higher current apps... better not.

No offence to o-like or anything, it is just that I am more of DIY guy. I like to make everything in my lasers, including the driver and everything, exceptions are greenies which I buy modules from O-like.
 
I agree with Eudaimonium.
These and the "650" drivers do not meet our standards. With a little work-over (changing resistors, etc.) they make, at best, decent drivers.
Spend a little more and get a stable driver.

They would probaby draw a lot of current and become highly inefficient along with HOT after a minute of operation.

Best to use with 1x li-ion cell, not much to boost with full battery (only 1-1.5 V, unlike 3.5 needed with NiMHs).

Well, even at only a 70% efficiency (about what you'd expect for a rckstr driver on two lithium batteries), to output 200mA at 5.5 (erring on the side of caution; shouldn't need that high voltage or that much current), which is a 1.1W output, it only needs 1.57W input, at 2.4V, which is less than 700mA. 700mA Ni-MH batteries are easy to find, and I don't know any batteries that are unsafe to run at 1C, which would still give me about an hour of battery life. But I need someone to tell me if they've tested it or if they could test it for me real quick, and tell me if it works, not just theorize.

Well, I think I have some NiMHs back home, I'll try it out at PHR @100mA.

That, or I can make a voltage regulator circuit and set it to 2.7 V (lowest input of LM3410X by the datasheet), and measure the current.

You are right, theoritizing isn't doing any good :) Testing is needed.

Sorry, my testing will not be real quick as I will go home tomorrow, now it's 11:22 PM, I'll be home 4:30 PM tomorrow, and I have to unpack and sh't, not doing any tests right away.
If you can wait that long, I'll gladly put something together and test it out.

Yeah, I'm not in too much of a hurry. My friend who'll be buying a laser from me won't be buying one for a month at minimum.

I'm sorry, I didn't test the current draw yet,
I have been somewhat busy lately and not being able to put together a voltage source.

I will do it today anyhow, I got some related stuff to do so this will be 'by the way' test.

Sorry for the waiting time...
 
It's quite alright, I'm not in anything of a hurry, just curious.
For sure I'll do it today, I don't want to keep you waiting any longer since you have been very patiend with me all this time.
What voltages exactly do you want it tested at?
