G2 is a single element short focal length and the GBall is a single element longer focal length, both are around 95% efficient.

i do have this lpm but to be fair im not using it that much anymore because i found out that the readings especially on lower wavelengths was way high especially on 405nm range and this could happened due to the uncoated white sensor, we know the ability of the lower wavelengths to be absorbed better even on white surfaces and could be the case here. im not an expert or anything and those are just my thoughts, mostly im using my newer pocket lpm v2 that readings are more fair on all wavelengths. (v2 coating is awesome i tried it even with the 7w cooled nubm42 needle focused close to gball lens without a problem,i know that v1 was crap)

readings was higher by around 100-150mw on the 700-800 range(the lower the wavelength the higher the difference),i tried with different 405nm diodes to be sure.imagine to have a bdr209 running at 550ma and getting a reading like 1060mw.

i talked with tommy once that i wanted to make a review about his v2 lpm and he just replied also to me that the lpm i got to compare it has higher readings also(which i already knew)
also laserbee if i remember correctly mentioned that in a post while he was trying to calibrate it.anyway it will be good for comparing same wavelength diodes but most likely you will getting some higher readings compared to(lets say) DTR's tests or other brand lpm's.

Well I already ordered the hyperion last night, it's supposed to be within +/- 5% and a lot of people were knocking the pocket V2, but for comparing blue lasers and tracking degradation it should be fine even if the reading is consistently high.

If the pocket V2 is any good I will order it as well, I just didn't want to quote a reading and have members say that pocket meter is inaccurate.

I can also calibrate/use the Hyperion meter with an Ophir sensor.

i had a full day and didn't find time for the testings,sorry about that.

yeah it will do the job nicely for what you bought it for. i think that pocket lpm reviewed when it was the version 1 out and was horrible and no one messed up with it again after that.after the v2 came out seems to be improved especially the coating compared to the previous version.

double post to add some info.

finally i found some time to make some further testings on power losses with the refocusing method and i have to say RedCowboy that you are partly right about the power loss especially on 42 compare to 08

i made the test with exactly same optics(1xG2 and 1x 3 element)on psu current and playing on the 1w range so heat would not matter that much between measurements.

nubm08 metered 1012mw out of the gball and (very interesting and double checked it) after refocusing method 902mw:wtf: only 11% power loss over 2 lenses?how is that even possible after a 3 element? :thinking:

in other hand the nubm42 had a more expected power loss.
1012mw measured out of the gball and after refocusing method 759mw,25% power loss seems reasonable for the method and enough to make a difference in burning,i can't really explain why the nubm08 has so low power loss though

even with that power loss nubm42 could make 4.7-5w with half divergence that 08 which would be good enough also

I have not tested the backwards G2 + 3 element set up for power yet but the nubm42 with GBall removed and running a 3 element does 4.2w @ 4.5a and I saw this on several nubm42 diodes, now I know the G2 and GBall are both around 95% efficient so you would have to add another 10% loss from 4.2w which would leave 3.8w if there was no extra clipping, but as the nubm42 is highly divergent I really think it clips between the backwards G2 and 3 element, but just the burning test I did at 6 feet from my desktop to my wall target showed it was down on power a lot, although the beam and spot was greatly improved.

If I remember right the distance between my backwards G2 and 3 element was about 15mm and the print coming out of the backwards G2 was like the raw diode output only longer as seen on my wall, so if a 3 element loses 30% and it focuses around 6-7mm then at 15.....well you can see where I think it's clipping.

Here is my test bed for the nubm42 with GBall removed and a 3 element with 3X beam expander, it burns pretty good at 15-23 feet but the diode will have a reduced lifespan with it's can removed so I don't think I will build it into any hosts, I thought about converging several just for fun.

4.2w for 4.5A is very low for this diode,are you sure that you are not running the diode very hot? with EDIT: gball*it can very easily hit 6.5w and with some extra cooling i passed the 7w.or your 3 element could be wrong coating?

I bought all my nubm42 diodes from techhood and his other accounts, newgazer ect and I received GBall diodes with the standard can, not the short nubm08 style can, other than that I don't know....it's possible he sent me nubm41's but I bought nubm42's and nubm06's, the last order was for 2 x 42's and 1 x 06 but all 3 were identical in every way, power, divergence.....

I got 4279mw from a nubm42 with the GBall removed with a standard 3 element 450nm AR coated lens, I also used an excellebt half thread 3 element lens and was in the same range, I tested brand new nubm44 diodes with 3 element lens and got 5.2 - 5.5w which is correct with a 3 element, so it's not my lenses, I suppose it's possible I am getting sub par nubm42 diodes.

What LPM are you getting 7 watts from a nubm42 diode with ? Maybe you got nubm06 in place of 42 ?

Did you see the youtube test of a nubm42, he got 5.2w

im getting the reading with pocket lpm,my hyperion readings are even higher(but i have the small edition up to 2w readings). there is no way to be a 06 as the wavelength is definitely higher than 06's around 455nm like 08's.im getting around 6.5w with good heatsinking and 7 only by cooling it down. did you measure any 42 with gball intact? also i remember the current was a bit higher around 4.6-4.7A

OK here it is, the distance from backwards G2 to 3 element was not 15mm it's about 7mm and the clipping is not that bad, I had the G2 in the normal way when it was clipping.

Here's a brand new NUBM42 with GBall intact with a backwards DTR G2 and a 3 element running @ 4.6a, the power out is 3688 and I don't think that's high as my other readings are all in line with what's reasonable and expected.
Note: I decided I don't like the 3D printed LPM case and I took it off, I may make my own later that holds the meter, head and battery all together in 1 unit, the sensor would be attached but in open air.

case here is that our diodes have big power difference and i don't think its lpm's problem. from the testing i think there is no clipping output,just a normal power loss due to optics(at least in my case).

just care how you touching your lpm and always store it in the antistatic bag,i don't have a case either.

Clipping is not a problem, I had looked at it with the G2 inserted normally, when backwards there is no major clipping, but forward and there's a lot of clipping between the normally inserted G2 and 3 element, but that's not a factor in this case.

Why I am not getting the same diodes as you are I don't know, but I won't buy any more from China if that's what's going on here.

Something to remember is the divergence out of my nubm42 gballs is so bad that I can't fit it onto my 6x6mm lpm sensor so my reading of 4287mw is without a GBall and running a 3 element, so it should be about 1100mw higher from the GBall...that's 5400mw and 3688 from the GBall + G2 + 3 element which will fit on my sensor and makes a much better beam, so the difference between basically 4.3w and 3.7w is the addition of the GBall and a G2 which are both 95% efficient, so clipping is only accounting for 175mw which is nothing to speak of and could be other factors.

GBall only = 5.4w terrible beam
3E only = 4.3w good beam but accelerated degradation
GBall+G2+3E = 3.7w good beam


I thought about static so I put a switch in my battery line and thought I could run the meter inside the anti static bag, only concern would be heat build up but as I don't run it for very long and I can easily switch it off between test if doing several, nothing on the board should ever get too hot.

I could be wrong but I don't think you should power up devices inside antistatic bags. They are conductive and something might short out.

They are conductive, but only at a very high resistance. It will keep ESD from knocking out your ICs, but at low voltages like 9 volts. Nothing to worry about. We get so little ESD here in western WA that it is overkill, but I have an ESD mat and wrist strap along with all my soldering irons being earth grounded.
