im looking to build a laser that is capable of burning things. nothing major lets say a middle of the road laser. im not looking for full out power but not looking for just your average laser pointer. i have very good soldering skills and have wired many complex circuts so i am capable in that aspect. i just am looking for some guidence before i sink a few hundred dollars into a project. so does wave length matter as much as output watts and things like that. im just looking to be educated....thanks,
burro breath:)

check out the link in my signature

also wavelength is mostly preference some burn better than other but the more power you have. well the more power you have:beer:

So ive been reading the provided link and think i'm going to start with the laser out of old hd dvd player. Is this a good place to start? Should I build the drive board or buy one. Also do I have to use the lens out of the hd dvd player or should I buy one. The last question is....i have a medical grade variable current and voltage power supply, is this going to provide clean enough power?

ok so depending on your power source you can build a driver for like 3$

Laser driver - It can be done so you need a focusing module Laser focusing module for 5.6mm laser diodes (adjustable focus) [M0034] - $3.99 : Modwerx Shop

as far as the bench psu i don't have one some people drive diodes directly of them. but there is a certain way you have to do this so hopefully someone else will chime in.

also if you don't want to take apart your hd dvd player you can get the same diode here

PHR-805T laser diode 405nm 100-120mW [M0025] - $9.99 : Modwerx Shop

Thanks...i think i'm just going to buy the diode driver and focusing unit all from the link you posted...will that diode and focusing unit provide me with a burning laser? Should I just specs the extra money and buy something in the 200-300 mw diode or will axis focuser you suggested not dissipate the heat from a higher power diode?

that will burn fine its a good power for your first laser also have you gotten safety glasses yet?

Saftey glasses will be FIRST thing. I only get one set of eyes. Luckily I work for my neighbor who has a phd and worked at Nasa in the optics area. So I have glasses readily avilable. Im going to get a few extra pairs for friends.

awsome man

btw have you decided if you want to make it a labby style or handheld?

Awsome if your not using a fixed currrent driver you will need to make or buy a testload
