So I removed the diode from an Xbox 360. It is not the HD, I just wanted to see if I could remove the diode and get it to "fire". All I cared about was getting a visible beam from it. That said I have no idea if its an IR diode or not.

I applied voltage via a single AA 1.5v battery (new) I checked it with a multi meter though and it reads 1.8-1.9vdc that said it's an analog unit :o Now my problem is I am unsure of which pin is the case pin. I think I have that figured out but not 100% positive. I tried applying the current every which way I could and got nothing. I tried two AA's one or two ways but still got nothing. I did however take a picture of it and the polarity and resistance via leads.

Help?

P.S. I was very careful removing it, and soldering the wires to the pins.

you will not be able to see if that diode is working without some sort of IR device(camera with night shot) as that is a IR diode.

Also never fire a diode up without some sort of current regulating device (driver) to regulate the current from the batt.

Last but not least if you going to play with lasers man be careful with your eyes. If you happened to fire that diode up and was looking directly at it you could have damaged them. Use caution before you throw it to the wind.

So it is for a fact an IR diode? I wouldn't say I threw caution to the wind though I wasn't really being all that safe about it either. I just made sure it was pointing away from me, mostly at a downward angle on the table I was working on.

Was the information I read on the lower resistance lead being the case pin that is not used?
