Yup.
I think low powered IR diodes are used just for reading cds, low powered reds are used for reading dvds. But I'm 100% sure high powered IR diodes are used for burning cds, and high powered red diodes are used for burning dvds.

A lot of damage to your eyes.Not that much damage to regular stuff...
It would probably cut tape and pop balloons not too far away, and maybe light a match on a good day.But isn't the 80mW figure refering to pulsed? :-/

just wanted to let everyone know that i still have my eye sight :D

I do see patterns but those are from a welding accident in school >:( (lol)

should i be extra careful now that my eye has been exposed to IR ?
like ...... is it a higher risk to be blind if they have been exposed before?
I still have the pain in my eyes tho :-/

no one has said anything about the laser im building :-?

Well you should be a lot more careful than you were so far, I'll give you that ::)
I don't know if your eyes are more sensitive now, but that pain is not a good thing.Maybe you should visit the eye doctor again and tell him everything that happened if you wanna be sure.

yes i harvested the red one :D look now im gonna upload a few more photos now

i saw in a vid that i should remove the soldering thats there....

this is where i made my misstake
i got these 3 when i harvested the dvd burner
I thought the glass thing was IR and the 2 metal things red lasers :&

That would be a Light Emitting Diode. Aka an LED.

The glass thing is an LED, it's like a little light bulb. ;D
Now what you want to do is to put the red diode in an aixiz housing.

EDIT: Oooooohhhhhhh!!!!!!!! Razako beat me to it.
