I think 445 blues look pretty cool, and are definitely affordable in the 1W range. For $350 you could easily get something solid over 2W that can burn very well. For the kind of scratch you could get something store-bought (survival lasers or o-like or....WL [they DO look cool even if they're a junk company...]) but I would mostly take the above advice and keep your eyes on the B/S/T threads around here. When you see something you like, check out the rep of the seller and you should be good to go. Some of them are even US based so you don't have to sweat customs or anything.
With that kind of power make sure you get some glasses that will block the wavelengths you'll be working with, as you can do some serious damage before you can blink, even at a distance. Have fun, be safe and smart!
